BARITE
Barite is a natural mineral with the chemical structure barium sulfate (BaSO4), distinguished among industrial filler minerals by its exceptionally high density and chemical inertness. It is used as a strategic heavy filler in the paint, plastics, rubber, and construction chemicals industries to increase specific gravity and maximize chemical and thermal resistance. Thanks to its low oil absorption capacity, it allows for a high filler loading in formulations without increasing binder (resin) consumption and strengthens the mechanical barrier properties of coatings.
Key Features and Advantages
- High Specific Gravity: With a density exceeding 4.2 g/cm³, it provides ideal mass for sound insulation and vibration damping (acoustic insulation) systems in the automotive and construction sectors.
- Chemical Inertness: Exhibits complete stability against acids, alkalis, and other corrosive chemicals, enhancing the corrosion resistance of heavy-duty industrial paints.
- Low Oil Absorption: Ensures minimum binder consumption in resin systems, maintaining viscosity stability even at high filler loadings, and reducing production costs.
- Radiation and Heat Shield: Its ability to block X-rays and gamma radiation (radiopaque) adds structural safety in hospital, nuclear facility, and specialized industrial coatings.

Areas of Use
Barite is used in the paint industry, especially in powder coatings, primers, and marine paints, as a gloss and flow stabilizer; in the plastics and rubber sector (brake pads, sound insulation barriers) as a mass-increasing, friction-resistance-improving reinforcing filler. In construction chemicals, it is a fundamental formulation component in specialized mortars requiring radiation shielding and high-strength insulation sealants. Furthermore, it maximizes chemical and mechanical resistance in epoxy floor coatings and polyurethane potting resins.
Storage and Shelf Life
Being an inorganic and non-reactive mineral, it does not undergo chemical degradation. It should be stored in dry, closed, and well-ventilated warehouses, on wooden pallets, in original 25 kg paper/PP bags or 1-ton big-bag packaging. Under ideal storage conditions, its shelf life is practically unlimited, but packaging integrity must be maintained to prevent agglomeration due to ambient humidity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is barite preferred over calcite in paint formulations?
Barite has a significantly higher density and chemical inertness compared to calcite (calcium carbonate). Thanks to these properties, it forms a unique barrier in acid and corrosion-resistant heavy-duty (marine and industrial) primers and paints.
What is the cost advantage provided to the manufacturer by low oil absorption capacity?
Barite's low oil (resin) absorption capacity means that even with a high filler loading in the formulation, it does not require an increase in the amount of expensive binder (resin). This keeps the system's viscosity at a controllable level and reduces the unit production cost.
What is barite's role in sound and vibration insulation?
Barite's high specific gravity (approximately 4.3 g/cm³), when added to polymeric systems (rubber, PVC, or polyurethane), increases the material's acoustic impedance, thereby preventing the transmission of sound waves. For this reason, it is indispensable as a mass-increasing filler in automotive floor mats and engine compartment insulation.
