DIETHYLENE GLYCOL (DEG)
Diethylene Glycol (DEG) is an aliphatic diol with the chemical formula C4H10O3, characterized by its clear, colorless, low volatility, and highly hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing) nature. Its structure, containing two reactive hydroxyl groups and an ether bond, makes it a critical building block in the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), polyurethanes, and plasticizers. In the construction chemicals and paint industries, its superior solvent properties, miscibility with water in all proportions, and high boiling point provide formulation flexibility.
Key Features and Advantages
- High Reactivity: Acts as an excellent cross-linker and chain extender in polymerization reactions, increasing the mechanical strength of resins.
- Superior Hygroscopic Structure: Prevents product drying in adhesive, printing ink, and textile applications due to its capacity to retain water vapor.
- Low Volatility: Possesses a significantly higher boiling point compared to Monoethylene Glycol (MEG), minimizing evaporation losses in high-temperature processes.
- Freezing Point Depression Effect: Effectively lowers the freezing point in water-based systems, providing stability in industrial heat transfer fluids and antifreeze formulations.

Areas of Application
DEG is primarily consumed in industry as a basic raw material in the production of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) used in the composite and marine sectors. In the cement industry, it is the main active component of clinker grinding aid formulations; it increases mill efficiency and reduces energy costs. Furthermore, it has a wide range of uses as a dehydration (moisture removal) agent in natural gas plants, a chain extender in polyurethane foam production, and a carrier solvent in the textile/printing sector.
Storage and Shelf Life
Due to its hygroscopic nature, Diethylene Glycol should be stored in its original sealed packaging or closed tanks, protected from moisture. Stainless steel, aluminum, or epoxy-lined tanks are most suitable for storage. Carbon steel tanks can only be used if moisture ingress into the system is completely prevented. When stored at ambient temperature, away from direct sunlight and strong oxidizing agents, in dry and well-ventilated areas, the shelf life is between 12 and 24 months from the production date.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the technical difference between DEG and MEG (Monoethylene Glycol)?
Diethylene Glycol (DEG) has a higher molecular weight, a higher boiling point, and a lower evaporation rate compared to Monoethylene Glycol (MEG). These properties make DEG more suitable for industrial processes requiring high-temperature resistance and low volatility.
What is DEG's specific role in cement production?
DEG functions as a chemical grinding aid during the grinding of cement clinker, preventing particles from adhering to the mill wall or to each other (agglomeration). This increases grinding efficiency and optimizes energy consumption.
Why is DEG used in natural gas processing plants?
Due to its high water absorption (hygroscopic) capacity, DEG is used as a liquid desiccant agent to remove water vapor from natural gas streams. This dehydration process prevents corrosion and the formation of gas hydrates in pipelines.
